Black History Month

Since 2013 Xen Arts has offered Black History Month workshops in Norfolk.

We feel there is a need for these workshops to be delivered here in Norfolk, a predominantly white county. Through the workshops, we aim to break down barriers and stereotypes, challenge racism and encourage understanding, knowledge and appreciation of other cultures.

More recently Xen Arts invited Dr Maxine Room CBE MEd BEd (Hons) Cert Ed to deliver a CPD workshop to local artists in East Anglia. The ‘Inclusive Diversity to Reduce Bias’ workshop was to provide a safe non-judgemental space where local artists could start having important conversations around ‘How to be Comfortable with Being Uncomfortable’, sparked by the Black Lives Matter issues that came to the forefront in 2020. We feel it is vital to continue the conversations so they don’t just fade when not trending on social media or making news headlines. Hopefully this is a starting point where we take a closer look at our individual bias and how to start making positive local changes within our community. Xen Arts recognises that changes to curriculum etc aren’t going to be implemented on a nationwide level by the government so feel the importance to continue this work at a local grassroots level. We look forward to inviting Dr Room back in February for a follow up session... watch this space!!
