Zimbabwe 2016

In 2016 we returned to work with young women based at Oasis in Harare. Oasis run a course for young women who have experienced domestic abuse or trauma in their lives which equips them with skills to start their own dressmaking business. They were already running some arts classes as part of the course so were open to the idea of us running a project which offered dance, yoga, theatre and spoken word as a means of confidence building and empowerment. Working with Brian Geza from Zvishamiso Arts, we ran daily sessions including technique, trust games, creative movement and mindfulness.

Towards the end of our project, we had a day of workshops inviting professional Zimbabwean artists to teach other styles that the ladies wanted to try out. We also invited the students from Glen View Primary to join us for a day of dance with ballet basics taught by Faye Jackson and funky street dance with  Michelle Nativel and Airbourne.  We also had fun decorating t-shirts, with the Oasis ladies sharing fashion tips with the young students.
